How to Choose the Perfect Song for a Dance Championship

It’s not a secret — music is super important in your performance!
❓But how do you find the right song?
❓What kind of music works best for a championship?

Here are our top tips ⬇️

The song you choose for the championship should:

1️⃣ Match your energy and personality

The music should feel right for your body and vibe.
If your body moves better with slow, smooth lines — a fast metal song or hard hip-hop may not be your best choice. If you’re quick and energetic, a slow romantic ballad might not be your style.
Choose a track you can show not only with good technique but also with real emotion.
Think about:
 • your natural body language
 • your look and energy
 • your style and expression
☝🏻Not every song you like to hear is good for your body to dance.

2️⃣ Have clear structure and energy changes

Monotone songs often look boring on stage.
The best songs have a musical story:
• Intro
• Build-up
• Climax
• Ending
This gives you a chance to:
 • change tempo and feeling
 • move through layers of music
 • make clear accents
With music like this, your dance will look more interesting and powerful to judges and audience.

3️⃣ Not be too popular or “overused”

This point is important and affects how people feel your dance.
A very famous song might send two messages:
❌ you don’t know the dance scene well
✅ or you are brave and ready to compete with strong dancers
But remember: when people hear a well-known song, they start comparing.
You’re not only dancing in this championship — you also compete with every dancer who used this song before.
If you’re not ready for that — choose a fresher track.

❓How to know if a song is “too popular”?
The song is/was everywhere. Big hits that play in cafés, shopping malls, on TikTok — they feel “old” fast, even if not many dancers used them.

You often see this song in your Instagram or TikTok feed, danced by many people. Try searching on YouTube, Insta or TikTok: [Song Name] + dance or choreography. If you see a lot of videos — this song is probably overused 💁‍♀️

😉 Pro tip: Usually only 2–3 songs from an album are popular.Try listening to other tracks from the same artist — they may be less known but just as cool. Or try a new cover version — it can feel fresh and unique.😉 Маленька порада: часто з усього альбому на слуху лише пара-трійка пісень. Якщо копнути глибше, можна знайти схожі за стилем і менш популярні(але не менш круті) пісні того ж автора. Чи можна взяти свіженький кавер цієї пісні і це вже буде набагато цікавіше.

4️⃣ Still feel fresh after many listens

This is the hardest part. At first, the song may feel perfect — your favorite, inspiring, exciting. But you will listen to it every day for weeks (or months). In training, in your headphones, in your head before sleep. If it starts to annoy you or make you tired — people will see it on stage. And they feel when the music doesn’t give you energy anymore.
📍Emotion is not a small thing. Even a perfect technical performance can fail if you have no inner fire. Judges and the public notice when the dancer is “done” with the song. That makes your impact much smaller. You must love this song. And be okay with hearing it 200+ times.
No one can know for sure if the song will stay fresh — but here are some clues:
• If after 3 practices you want to skip it — big red flag
• If you feel nothing when dancing — think again
• If you’re not sure — take 1–2 days off and listen again with fresh ears
A good song will turn you on every time and give you energy from inside.
